This introductory course explores the three major stages of projectile behavior: internal, external, and terminal ballistics. Learners will examine the key factors affecting a projectile from ignition and launch through flight and eventual impact. The course establishes the terminology and scientific concepts needed for further study of ballistic performance.
The course introduces the three principal branches of applied ballistic science. Internal ballistics examines the events occurring within the firearm before and during projectile launch. External ballistics focuses on projectile behavior after it leaves the firearm and travels through the atmosphere. Terminal ballistics considers what occurs when a projectile reaches and interacts with a target.
Learners will explore the physical factors that influence projectile movement during each stage. Basic concepts such as pressure, velocity, acceleration, trajectory, and energy are introduced. The influence of gravity and atmospheric conditions on projectile flight is discussed. The course also introduces the relationship between projectile design and terminal behavior. Examples are used to demonstrate how the three areas connect within the wider field of ballistic science. The material provides a foundation for more advanced study of firearm and projectile performance.
